Choosing the Perfect Pediatrician

Prior to becoming a parent, one of the important decisions you will need to make, is to choose a pediatrician.  Upon first thought, you may think this is going to be an easy task, right?  Thanks to the internet you can look up local pediatricians in our area and find quite a lengthy list of options to choose from.  And if you ask on local Facebook moms groups for a pediatrician you’ll more than likely be given a long list of options as well.  The problem though, is that not all pediatricians are the same with the same ways of doing things.  Each one has a different personality and passion.  They all have different views and ways of handling things like vaccinations, antibiotics, introducing foods, & growth.  How far away from your home and/or work are they located?  What is there approach on breastfeeding and formula feeding?  Some practices provide a small staff of doctors which allows for more individualized care; while larger practices often provide more options for evening and weekend appointments.

In the same way it’s important to find a doctor or midwife during your pregnancy that aligns with what’s most important to you; it’s just as important to choose a pediatrician that aligns with how you plan to parent.  There are many decisions as parents that you will have to make that not everyone is going to agree with, and THAT’S OKAY.  Guess what, you will never please everyone….you just won’t.  Do your research, talk to your partner and make decisions based off of your own convictions and beliefs.  Then choose a pediatrician who respects you as a parents and most closely aligns with what you need and what’s important to you.  We’ve created this list of questions to use in your quest for the perfect pediatrician.

  1. I was talking to my brother the other day. He was telling me about looking for a pediatrician to go to with his kids. Since he has moved he hasn’t found one so I will tell him to look for someone that aligns with how he parents.

  2. I really need to find a pediatrician for my child, but I don’t know how to find one. That is a great idea to ask on social media to see if anyone knows a good pediatrician. I never would have thought to go on Facebook and ask people there. Thank you for the tips!

  3. I liked your suggestion of collecting recommendations from people you know online via social media when looking for a pediatrician. This would be helpful I’d think since it would give me a large pool of known doctors to research and determine which one I’m most comfortable with. Do you suggest meeting with each one individually to ask the questions you compiled in your list?

  4. It’s great that you pointed out finding a doctor that will align with how you plan to parent. I would imagine that you can really learn a lot of great techniques from watching and listening to your pediatrician. My sister is looking for a pediatrician for her son; I will be sure to share this with her.

  5. My family recently moved and I need to find a pediatrician for my daughter. You make a great point that you should find out about appointment hours because some larger practices have options for appointments in the evening and on weekends. I think that this would be a large benefit for us so that my daughter won’t have to miss any school for doctor’s appointments. Also, I like that you say to consider the personality of the pediatrician because I want to make sure that I get along with them and can address any questions or concerns I might have.
